The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
