European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
